American society is increasingly permeated with diversity. Diversity goes beyond ethnicity, race, or religion, and it is everywhere; even in the home! Add to this complexity the fact that culture is dynamic; it changes, no matter how hard we fight to maintain traditions. It is this change--human free will that enables reluctance and rejection in some to follow every tradition to the letter--that can cause conflict. At the core of the conflict are self-esteem/identity, perception, stereotyping, and to an extent, oppression. If we are to capitalize on diversity, we must be aware of these concepts and our personal tendencies in this regard.
Leading diversity is unavoidable, whether in the home, the classroom, or the office; we are all leaders at one time or another. Students as well as school officials, corporate employees, parents, sons and daughters can benefit from learning about this leadership model and the themes inherent in diversity, whether in the role of leader, participant, or follower.
